HISTORY OF THE ASIAN BEAUTY STANDARD

Map

The white-washed beauty standard in Asia came from biases based on class systems and are rooted in colonisation.

White skin was already favoured by many asian countries, pre-colonisation. It represented what type of class you were e.g if you had a lighter complexion, this meant that you were wealthy, while if you had a darker complexion, this meant that you were poor and ‘working on the fields’.

This idea was more enhanced by colonisation when Western influences around make-up and fashion started spreading around asia. Because of this, most Asian Countries embraced western beauty standards and woven it into their own beauty standards.

The negative effects of these beauty standards are very visible in countries such as Korea, China and Japan where a lot of women have gone through cosmetic surgeries. They do this to look more ‘attractive’ because of what their beauty standard says.
